Colonial House is located in the historic old town of Quito, Equador, a short walk away from the main plaza and presidential palace. The hostel is owned and managed by lovely Ornelia and her family, who are very warm and welcoming people.
The house itself is very old and charming. Ornelia has done a great job of decorating it in warm shiny colors and with many cozy playful details. There are pictures of happy guests pinned on corkboards lining the hallway.
There is a kitchen, dining areas, a reading nook on the second floor and a lounge area complete with couches, guitar and television, as well as a DVD player. It’s nothing fancy, but cozy, simple and done with great love for detail.
Staying at Colonial House feels like staying with a relative, or with family. Ornelia and her daughter Paulina are great hosts, and they are never bothered and always very happy to help you with anything. The rooms are comfortable and clean, if a little chilly at night, but extra blankets can be arranged.
There is a shared bathroom on each floor, with hot water, that, with Latin America being a great guru for any traveling 1st world yogi, may take some time to kick in. There is also internet on the common computer in the hostel’s office, and Wi-fi. Colonial House is more than just a hostel, it feels like home.
Checking in to Colonial House is easy. You can book directly through Colonial House’s website, Trip Advisor or Hostelbookers. Prices vary, depending on which room you choose.
