Let’s just for fun, give your intuition a pet name. Let’s call it Houston; “Houston we have a problem!” You’re out in the deep space of your consciousness looking for answers. However, back over the radio waves you only hear white noise. “Houston are you ‘reading’ me?” It is like a scene in the film Gravity with no way back to “grounding”. Houston, your intuition has deserted you.
This is when you will want to rely on your intuition the most; when you have a problem. When you feel fear, it becomes difficult to hear your inner conscience. This is because when you are put into a situation where your adrenaline is running, you will not be able to hear your own intuition. You are using your brain incorrectly.
Firstly, everyone has gone to the flight or fight, self-protecting, mind mechanism. During the fight or flight response, blood leaves the stomach area to aid the arms and legs for what is next. It is perfect if you have to run away or fight off a predator, our system is set up just for that purpose. If the threat is constant, such as a stressful job, money, or in a bad relationship, then we can be in a constant state of flight or fight. The blood was doing an important job in the stomach before we needed it in the arms and legs. It was aiding digestion and supporting the immune system. Anyone who suffers from IBS will have an idea of how stress relates to their symptoms. In survival mode, we are in the wrong part of the brain for getting ideas, or intuition.
Secondly, you’re likely to be over thinking; the same thought might be constant. So you can’t hear your intuition in a noisy mind. When a person becomes overwhelmed, he or she can also shut down. Too many choices can cause it to fall into a state of ambivalence and become stuck in a situation of making no decisions at all.
So here’s what you can do to pilot your own space ship and reach for the stars. Even when the altitude feels a little scary, you can always have contact with Houston! Let’s get your mind back from the “inter‘panic’tary”!
Step 1.Take 10 minutes of silence. Just breathe and turn everything off. You’ll hear more if you make the mind as quite as you can. Go and have a cat nap if you can. Just a small amount of sleep can switch your brain around. Remember when people say ‘Sleep on it’? That is because your brain has a chance to reset from the day.
Step 2. Put music on and sing along. This will open the heart and allow your heart-centered intuition to be heard.
Step 3. Dance. If you can put music on and engulf yourself into the music, not only will you shake off some of the repressed energy that comes with a problem, but also you’ll create those “feel good” endorphins, that will cause your brain to feel happy. I often do this and have the answers by the end of the tune.
Step 4. Do anything that makes you feel good. Take a hot bath, make yourself a cup of your favorite tea, spend time with young children etc… When you feel good, you tend to let go of the very thing holding you back from the solution; the worry of not having a solution!
Step 5. Practice Yoga. I have no idea if it’s the blood between my ears in downward facing dog, or if it is the space in-between the breath, but the insights I get at the end of a yoga session, are some of the most profound. It’s what stillness is made for!
The main point here is that thinking doesn’t give you the answers. It’s the space in between the thoughts, where the answers emerge. The words are just our way of making sense of what we already know to be true.
